Parmo

Parmo

Tattoo - The word, ‘Parmo’

Thank you to Nick for sharing his tattoo story.

For anyone wondering, here is a quick explanation of what a parmo is,

Parmo is a dish originating in Middlesbrough, England, and a popular item of takeaway food in the Teesside area. It consists of a breaded cutlet of chicken or pork with a white béchamel sauce and cheese, usually cheddar.

A quick backstory, who doesn’t love one?

My original plan is for my left arm to be full of everything from Teesside, as I don’t think I’ll ever move back home, (maybe when I retire).

I moved to London, struggled for a bit and once I got my feet on the ground started to get some tattoos.

First one was the transported bridge, as it’s a famous bridge from my hometown which is a good conversation starter too but not as much as the parmo tattoo.

The word Parmo, was inked as I can’t have it, nowhere in London sells them.

Apparently there is a manjanos in Ilford and a Parmohub in Battersea (after some research, it has permanently closed) and I’m not going to Ilford. Everyday people ask about my tattoo, what a parmo is and I love explaining it, everytime, it reminds me of home and the food!

Some mates get together and go to the pub, for me and my mates, we would get together and go out for a parmo, get stuffed, drive home, watch a movie and fall asleep. It was Parmo night, every night. Whenever I go home, it’s manjaros tonight, let’s go.

The big thing about Parmo’s, they aren’t outside of Teesside and everyone in Teesside loves them, to the point where I’ve been into a pub in London with my elbows up on a dash, ordering a drink, someone sees my parmo tattoo and starts talking to me, I know exactly where they are from.

It is a brilliant conversation starter whether they know what a parmo is or not, people ask and I’m happy to talk about it. Spreading the parmo joy, one conversation at a time.

PARMO EXTRAS

So if you’re ever in the area, where is the best place to get a Parmo?

There is a manjarios in the golf club at Ingleby Barwick which is always consistent.

Another Parmo insight is Nick told me about a forum on Facebook called, Parmo Hunters, where people go to different areas in Teesside and comment where they’ve been for a parmo and if it was decent or not.

Have you ever had the pleasure of trying a parmo? Did you know what it was before reading this post?
